20141125_0012 In celebration of the National Book Week with the theme “Philippine Libraries: Future Possibilities”, the High School Library led by Mrs. Michelle A. Abella conducted various activities participated to by the High School students and faculty. Among the activities conducted were movie marathon, puppet making contest, Y speak Dot Lib debate contest, 1 pix 4 words quiz bee, globe tour teacher edition and grouphie contest on chamber theater.

On November 24-28, 2014 a week-long movie marathon was held at 8:00-10:15, 11:30-1:00, and 4:00-6:00 in the High School Library. The movies were projected on screen during recess time, lunch breaks, and after classes in the afternoon to entertain the library comers. The following were the movies played: Pan’s Labyrinth, Voyage of the Unicorn, The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry, Bratz, and Mr. Woodcock.

Another activity conducted was puppet making. Through this contest, USL High School Readers develop clearer expression of their thoughts, feelings and ideas.  The activity was participated by the Book Club members of the High School Department facilitated by the Book Club Officers led by Ma. Antonette Abrenica, Book Club President. Two students from each section of the Book Club Members presented their puppet or cartoon. The contest was given the following criteria for judging: creativity, quality, visual appeal, and originality. The works of Dianne Pattaguan and Michael Gammad, both from Grade 8 St. Peter won the contest.
A series of British Parliamentary debate entitled “Y Speak Dot Lib” were also conducted among the different Grade levels of the Louisian stars at the High School Library to awaken High School students’ perception and views on issues and challenges affecting libraries. The first round was a match between Grade 9 and 4th year on November 18, 2014 which was won by the 4th year team with Sammy Lagas of 4-Aquino as the Best Speaker and Lewy Katrin of 4-Rizal as the Best debater. Round 2 was a match between Grades 7 and 8 on November 25, 2014 where the Grade 8 was declared winner with Zhina E’Lan Latupan of St. Peter as Best Speaker and Best Debater. The championship round which was a match between the winners of the two rounds was held on November 28, 2014. The grade 8 team emerged as the champion with Sammy Lagas as Best Speaker and Zhina E’Lan Latupan as the Best Debater. Among the members also of the winning team were Sophia Nicole Barasi and Adrielle Roselle Nicerio of St. Peter and John Cedrick Evaristo of St. Lorenzo Ruiz. The adjudicators who graced the debate were: Ms. Bernadette Gevera, High School Social Science Teacher; Ms. Charmaine Masuli, College Library Staff, Mr. Jenniko Quinto, Grade 8 Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Danoleene Tugade, College Library Reference In-charge and Mrs. Michelle Abella, High School Library Head.
Among the activities held too was entitled “1pix 4 words”. Two participants per curriculum of the higher year levels joined the contest. In the activity, the facilitator, Ms. Analyn Malana, showed a picture through the projector. The contestants identified either the author or title of the picture depending on what is being asked within 45 seconds. Pictures came from the cover of fiction books and movies in CDs/DVDs. Ms. Jamie Mary Loise Tan of 4-Rizal won the contest.
Faculty too of the High School department did not let themselves left behind by participating in the Globe Tour Contest, a competition of the teachers from different subject areas.  In the activity, the participants locate the country or place asked for in the globe.  Mr. John Aquino, a Science teacher won the contest. The said activity was conducted at the flagpole of the High School Department.
Lastly, to enhance students’ understanding and comprehension on fictions read, a groupie contest on chamber theater concluded the National Book Week Celebration on December 1, 2014 at the High School Library. Chamber theater is a method of adapting literary works to the stage using a maximal amount of the work’s original text and often minimal and suggestive settings. Participants from Grades 7 and 8 from both Academic and Science curriculums joined the contest composed of 8 to 10 members per group. The winner for the contest was determined according to presentation/delivery, vocal/verbal expression, clarity of the story, characterization, and audience impact. Mrs. Danoleene Tugade, Mrs. Josephine Taguinod, and Mr. Onofre Unciano, all from the College Library were the judges of the contest. The group of Grade 8 Science composed of Antonette Narag, Ria Jaravata, Arca Monteagudo, Selina Parallag, Wacky Maggay, Adrian Vicente, Vivi Calimag, Lennard Dulin, and Renz Cyrill Fontanilla won the said contest.
With these activities conducted by the High School Library and participated to by the High School students and faculty of USL, the National Book Week celebration was indeed a success one.
