University Libraries’ Social Action Programs Conducted in 3 Communities

The University of Saint Louis (USL) Libraries had successfully conducted the first wave of the Project Build and Beautify Libraries (BBL) at St. Francis Academy in Rizal, Cagayan held on Oct. 15, 2019.

Ms. Mary Angelique H. Baylon, serials librarian, along with four other library staff, spearheaded the said activity. Technical services such as accessioning, labeling, cataloging, and classifying of library materials were conducted by the group.

Ms. Monalisa Gundan, library in-charge, had her orientation with regard to the services towards the continuity of processes in accessioning of the school’s library materials. The Project BBL at the said school started last school year 2018-2019.

Meanwhile, the Book Mobile Project, also an extension service of the University Libraries, was redeployed during the first semester of the school year 2019-2020 in two adopted day care centers in nearby towns.

Ms. Jessa A. Lannao, Elementary Readers’ and Technical Services librarian, and Ms. Charmaine C. Masuli, college librarian head, together with two other librarians and one library staff, led and organized the redeployment of the extension service at Liwan Sur Day Care Center in Liwan Sur, Enrile on Oct. 8, 2019.

The group facilitated activities such as coloring sessions, nursery rhymes and storytelling among preschoolers during the opening program of the project.

Ms. Lannao and her group returned in the center after four weeks for the closing ceremony held last Nov. 6, 2019. Retrieval of books and other activities were done during the said date.

Ms. Maria Theresa C. Bautista, Readers’ Services Librarian of the college library, and four other library staff had their redeployment activities of the said extension service on Nov. 13, 2019 at Gadu Day Care Center in Solana, Cagayan.

The group likewise steered activities like action songs, storytelling and coloring sessions to the preschoolers during the said event. Turn-over of documents and reading materials was done after the activities.

The reading materials stayed at the said center for at least two months.

Now on its fifth year of implementation, the Book Mobile Project aims at providing literacy activities through setting up a mini library in various learning centers.

The University Libraries hopes to conduct more community involvement projects as well as extends its services to the University’s partner communities.
